Egypt the perfect destination for some winter sun

march 13, 2013 12:43pm

Sharm El Sheikh, The Red Sea

Helen has just returned from a week in the sun….

“We wanted a week away in the sunshine in March and to be honest if you don’t want to fly long haul in the winter then there aren’t too many options to guarantee the sun apart from the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Morocco, Tunisia or Egypt – and I’m so glad I went for this option as it was just the ticket!

It is around 5 ½ hours flight time to Egypt and as the airport is right in the centre of Sharm, the transfers to all hotels isn’t longer than about 30 minutes. At this time of the year it was baking hot most days, we had a couple of cloudy ones and then around 6pm it cooled down which meant a nice temperature for the evenings but you did need a cardigan on!

Sharm El Sheikh is host to scores of hotels from 3* hotels to 5* luxury hotels mainly all inclusive. We stayed in a hotel which was rated 5* but I would say more of a 4* compared to some of the hotels I have stayed at in Greece/Spain etc. But then I did also visit some luxury 5* hotels which I can highly recommend.

The staff in the hotels can’t do enough for you, the all inclusive buffets have an extensive choice of food, and our hotel The Grand Hotel had 8 swimming pools and its own private beach to relax on.

If you can tear yourself away from your book and cocktail by the pool there is lots to do and see in Sharm. It is made up of resorts along the coast, including Nabq Bay a small resort with a few shops/bars/restaurants and their newly opened “Hard Rock Café” then Sharks Bay a lovely cove with nice shops to pick up some souvenirs.

Naama Bay is the liveliest part of Sharm with endless shops and bars including “Camel Bar” a rooftop shisha bar where we sat and watched the world go by, Little Buddha and again it’s own Hard Rock Café. You did get a lot of locals in Naama Bay trying to get you into their shops, but this is part of going to Egypt and defiantly an experience!

Further afield we picked up our souvenirs – fantastic lamps made out of coconut – from the largest open air market known as “Old Sharm”.

There is a waterpark in Sharm which is open year round but I think at this time of year the water may be quite cold as was some of the swimming pools in the hotels. But fantastic in the summer.

The highlight of my trip was the “Desert Adventure” this took us about 20 mins from Sharm into the desert. We set off through the desert on quad bikes, the scenery was amazing, the desert is so vast and it was just great going over the sand on the quads. We then stopped and had a camel ride, again a great experience and some great photos! We then headed on our quads to a Bedouin Village where we sat on cushions and drank traditional Bedouin Tea and tried their shisha pipes and heard stories from the local guide about the Bedouin’s way of life living in the desert. We then went to a view point to watch the sun set, and then had watched African dancers and had a tasty BBQ. We then drove back on our quads in the dark through the desert towards the bright lights of Sharm with the guide, this ended off the day perfectly.

The Red Sea is also the perfect place to go diving and snorkelling, a lot of hotels have their own dive centres and our hotel had its own part of the reef to go snorkelling or if your hotel doesn’t then you can arrange a trip to go diving/snorkelling. One day we headed over to the resort of Dahab about 1.5 hours drive from Sharm and this is the best place to dive on the Red Sea, and you could tell when you got there as outside the bars and restaurants was flippers hung up outside after people had finished diving for the day!

Dahab has again many all inclusive hotels and it smaller than Sharm but has more of a traditional feel, it is very quaint with lovely stalls along the sea front and lovely bars and places to eat, a very calm and relaxing place.

What I liked about Sharm as well was in the evening you could have a nice meal in your hotel and then either have a quiet night with a few drinks at the bar,  or head out and about for a lively night. There are big clubs in Sharm like Pasha, Space, Taj Mahal and the one we went to “Dolce Vita” a nightclub in the desert! It was a very good night, with great music and being right in the middle of the desert was great, with lights along the desert mountains lighting the sky up.

A lot of the family hotels and larger ones have entertainment on in the evening, or you could get a taxi or shuttle bus into the Naama Bay very cheaply.

So Sharm really does have something for every budget and everyone. There are great hotels for families with fantastic facilities, there are adults only hotels if you want a relaxing time, there are 3* hotels if you are on a budget or 5* luxury hotels for the more discerning travellers.

You don’t need a visa to go to Sharm unless you are going on trips further afield to Luxor and Cairo. We did speak to a couple who went on the trip to Jerusalem / Bethlehem and the Dead Sea they said it was a long day but something they will never forget it was a fantastic and interesting trip.

You get very good value for money using the Egyptian Pound but also English notes were also widely accepted.

I would defiantly head back to Egypt again for some winter sun, camels, cocktails, diving, shopping and chilling out  :) "

Bodrum has a warm welcome for everyone...

november 07, 2012 09:22am

Turkey’s Aegean Coastline

Helen has just returned from 6 months working as a holiday advisor in Bodrum and can defiantly see why people return to this beautiful area of Turkey year after year.

“The Bodrum Peninsula has something for everyone whether you want to relax on the beach in Bitez, barter with the locals at the market in Turgutreis, sip cocktails by the castle on the Marina front in Bodrum, be adventurous & go scuba diving, windsurfing or on a jeep safari, dance the night away in lively Gumbet or head to Ephesus where you will find one of the seven ancient wonders of the world the Temple of Artemis and the huge ancient theatre which sat 25,000 people – there is just so much to see & do”

The main resorts on the Bodrum Peninsula…

Bitez –a lovely beach resort with big cushions & hammocks on the beach for lazy days and a good selection of restaurants for a laid back evening meal to watch the sunset.

Turgutreis – at the far end of the Peninsula and close to the Greek Island of Kos, it hosts the biggest and the best market in the area and has stunning views from the beachfront and promenade & some amazing All Inclusive hotels.

Torba- tucked away in a little bay Torba is a very quaint and scenic resort and also one of the best places to go fishing. Torba feel very secluded yet only 10 minutes from the centre of Bodrum by bus.

Gumbet – think vibrant nightlife, an endless choice of restaurants and bars, watersports, shopping and sunshine. Gumbet has all the right ingredients for a fantastic holiday for couples, young groups of friends & families.

Bodrum – is where old meets new. From the designer shops by the swanky Marina Yacht club to the old town filled with souvenirs and local craft shops you can dine out in some of the finest restaurants or have a cup of Turkish tea “chi” with the locals. Catch the catamaran over to Kos in just 20 minutes or look round the fascinating St Peter’s Castle on the harbour front.

As well as staying in some of the resorts on the Peninsula you can explore the local towns of Yalikavak and see the impressive windmills along the way, or the traditional fishing village of Gumusluck where you will also be able to walk to Rabbit Island, or head further afield to Dalyan to the mud baths & sulphur pools and the breathtaking Turtle Beach.

“While I was in Turkey the people were so friendly they make everyone feel at home. You have to try some of the local dishes like Kofte (meatballs) or pide (Turkish pizza) as well as the local drink “Raki” which is perfect with fish”

The Bodrum Peninsula also boasts so many different places to stay. You can head off the beaten track and stay in your own private villa, stay in a family owned property on a bed and breakfast basis, enjoy eating eat out every night which is still fantastic value for money and go self catering in Gumbet or Bitez or stay in one of the many hotels. Hotels range from 2* to 5* and you have the option of Bed & Breakfast to All Inclusive. All Inclusive hotels have great facilities and you can stay in adult only hotels or hotels which are perfect for families or some of the luxury hotels on the Peninsula for a special holiday.

So it really does have it all and whatever age you are or whatever you like to do on holiday you will find it on the Bodrum Peninsula.

You can easily hop on a local bus known as the “Dolmus” and head off for the day to anywhere around the Peninsula. Fares to Bodrum cost just £1-£2 from the main resorts. Or hire a car if you want to be more independent there are some lovely hidden spots to find.

There are now some great deals for Summer 2013 and you can fly from your local airport including Newcastle, Glasgow & Manchester to Bodrum from May to October.

****Special Offer****

Royal Asarlik Hotel, Gumbet 4* All Inclusive

Fly from Manchester for 7 nights - 2nd May 2013

£486 per person, Transfers included

"The Royal Asarlik was one of my favourite hotels as it ticked all the right boxes for the perfect holiday. Located at the far end of Gumbet beach you had lots of bars, shops & places to eat out near by but also far enough away (about 10/15 minutes walk) to the main nightlife in the resort. So you could have it as quiet and relaxing or as busy as you like. The hotel is set on 2 private beach areas one with a lovely beach bar & the other with watersports. The hotel rooms were large and modern and they also have superior rooms which are set in nice gardens. The hotel's Panorama Restaurant is set on the 6th floor so the views over Gumbet are fantastic. As well as the main restaurant there are 4 a la cartes - Chinese, Italian, Turkish & Fish which are included in the all inclusive package. As well as plenty of places to eat there are 6 bars one on the seafront which is 24 hours. The hotel staff are so friendly and the spa in the hotel is one of the highlights the Turkish Bath & Oil Maggage is a must! Turkish night is once a week where you get to try all the local dishes & they have a BBQ outside followed by traditional Turkish entertainment. People return time & time again to the Royal Asarlik"
